Kolkata: The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology would set up its second campus in Salt Lake, announced the institute's board of governors chairperson Tejaswini Ananth Kumar at the convocation on Friday. Degrees were conferred on 649 graduates from 10 courses, 288 postgraduates and 94 PhD fellows.
The campus will come up on a 38.5-cottah land in Salt Lake Sector III. "We have a plot in Salt Lake, where we plan to develop a facility, which will be used for academia-industry interactions.
Pointing at the challenges at their Shibpur campus, Murthy said the 113-acre campus had hostels to accommodate 2,400 boarders but it was not enough to lodge all applicants, especially given the growing number of girl students, who make for "30% of the total strength". "To meet the increasing academic, student, researchand innovation needs, the institute has worked out a master plan. It is looking at new infrastructure, including a 1,000-seat girls' hostel, a lecture hall complex, a 1,500-capacity multi-purpose auditorium and a guest house," said Murthy, adding IIEST would get a 1,000-single-seat boys' hostel by March and an academic building by June among others.
