The Orientation Program for the newly admitted B.Tech. students of the academic year 2025 was organized by the IIEST Authority on 25th August 2025. Owing to the large number of entrants, the program was conducted in two sessions—the first at 9:00 a.m. and the second at 11:00 a.m.—across three venues with live telecasting facilities. The Institute Hall served as the main venue, supplemented by the Seminar Hall of the Civil Engineering Department and the Gateway Hall (Gallery-II).
The Institute extended a cordial invitation to GAABESU (Global Alumni Association of Bengal Engineering and Science University) to join the program. In response, the following GAABESU office bearers attended:
Sri Amitabha Datta, President
Sri Arabinda Ray, Working President
Sri Malay Niyogi, Treasurer
Sri Parnab Sinha, Student Connect Team
Sri Amitabha Datta, President of GAABESU, was invited to the dais and seated beside the Director, Prof. V. M. S. R. Murthy, who also requested his presence for both sessions.
The program commenced with a documentary film highlighting the 169-year-old legacy of IIEST. The film showcased the Institute’s rich heritage, lush green zero-waste campus, advanced laboratories, modern academic facilities, and ongoing infrastructure development.
The event was formally inaugurated with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Prof. V. M. S. R. Murthy, Director, along with Sri Amitabha Datta and the Deans of the Institute.
Subsequently, the Registrar, Deans, and Heads of Departments extended a warm welcome to the freshers. They reassured the students of the Institute’s commitment to providing an inclusive and ragging-free campus. They also shared essential guideline, expectations, and useful information for the first-year students, for their academic journey.
The dignitaries’ seating arrangement on the dais reflected the Institute’s respectful gesture towards the President of GAABESU, symbolizing the strong partnership between the Institute and its Alumni Association.
In his address, Sri Amitabha Datta encouraged the students to embrace the exciting challenges ahead and make full use of the Institute’s resources—including the sports arena, gymnasium, swimming pool, and various cultural and technical clubs—beyond classroom learning. He further urged them to stay connected with GAABESU, emphasizing the immense benefits of mentorship, guidance, and opportunities provided by the global alumni network.
Prof. V. M. S. R. Murthy, Director, delivered a deeply inspiring address to the freshers. He began by welcoming them into the 169-year-old heritage institution, reminding them that they were now part of a proud academic tradition that had produced some of the finest engineers, scientists, administrators, and leaders of the nation.
As the academic and administrative head of the Institute, Prof. Murthy stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and intellectual curiosity in shaping their careers. He urged the students to excel not only in academics but also in research, innovation, and co-curricular activities—key pillars of the Institute’s holistic vision of education. He also highlighted ongoing and forthcoming initiatives for academic excellence, infrastructure development, digital learning, and international collaborations, which would open new avenues for growth for both students and faculty.
Prof. Murthy also reiterated that the strength of IIEST lies in its strong alumni base. He acknowledged the pivotal role of GAABESU and the global alumni community in supporting institutional development, scholarships, mentorship programs, and industry linkages. He encouraged students to nurture a bond with alumni from the very beginning, assuring them that such connections would prove to be invaluable in their careers.
Finally, Prof. Murthy motivated the new entrants to uphold the values of integrity, inclusiveness, and service to society—values that define the Institute’s ethos—and to strive to become not just successful professionals, but also responsible citizens contributing to national progress. His address set a tone of optimism, commitment, and ambition for the fresher’s journey ahead.
It was also heartening to note that many of the Deans and HODs, in their addresses, highlighted the values students could add to their careers with the support and guidance of alumni, including opportunities for scholarships, grants, and awards through GAABESU.
Since the Institute Hall could not accommodate all 800+ new students at once, the orientation was organized in two phases with simultaneous live streaming to the other auditoriums, ensuring meaningful participation for all. At the end of the sessions, a few students from different venues raised questions, which were duly addressed by the dignitaries.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by the Registrar, followed by the National Anthem. The second session was conducted in a similar format immediately after the first, for the remaining students.
